Overview
This project aims to update outdated range maps for seven species, including humans, across the United States, highlighting visual commonalities and disparities among populations. Each species will feature range maps from the 1800s, 1900s, and present day.
One of the primary challenges was developing a modern yet relatable design approach tailored for traditional clients. This required balancing innovative concepts with familiar aesthetics to meet client expectations.
Additionally, the project involved working under tight deadlines without an established visual style. This constraint necessitated rapid ideation and execution to ensure timely delivery.
Another significant challenge was extracting reference maps from 480p video footage. The task included recreating these maps in 4K Ultra HD resolution for application development, demanding precision and technical skill.
The project utilized a range of skills and technologies, including digital illustration, cartography, and semiotics. Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop was essential for creating high-quality visual content. Furthermore, a strong foundation in science and education informed the design process, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
